DESCRIPTION
K-ION is a specialised product that can be considered as an alternative to bagged Potassium Chloride (KCl) in situations where environmental restrictions prohibit the use of chloride based chemicals. K-ION is composed of a sophisticated mildly cationic complex that functions similar to KCl to control shale and clay activity.
APPLICATION
K-ION provides effective shale inhibition properties to water based fluids without the chlorides associated with KCl based systems. A 2 % KCl solution contains 9,530ppm of chloride while the equivalent of K-ION contains only 165ppm of chloride. This significantly reduces the chloride concentration and greatly lessens the environmental risks associated with the use of KCl fluids. The shale stabilising properties of K-ION are significantly enhanced when used in conjunction with encapsulating polymers such as CLAY DOCTOR, EZEE-PAC R or CR 650.
ADVANTAGES
- Extremely economical
- Easily mixed
- Excellent shale and clay stabiliser
- Improves productivity
- Effective at all pH levels
- Compatible with all polymer systems
- Compatible with contaminants, hard water and mild salinity
- Improves core recovery
TYPICAL PROPERTIES
- Appearance: Red translucent liquid
- pH (1 % solution): 7.0 – 9.0
- Specific gravity: 1.09
RECOMMENDED TREATMENT
K-ION is typically applied at concentrations of 2.0 – 6.0 litres per 1000 litres of make-up water.
K-ION should be added very slowly to the base fluid through a mud hopper, pour slowly into a mud tank with good agitation, or pour onto a water jet stream.
As drilling progresses the concentration of K-ION should be monitored and adjusted to provide the optimum inhibition to control clay hydration.
